The legal profession's frontlines demand hands-on expertise and the skills to navigate diverse people and scenarios. For those exploring a law career, this one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate equips you with essential knowledge to deliver legal services within a paralegal's authorized practice areas.
Your journey begins with mastering effective communication while exploring various legal domains through courses covering legal research, writing, torts, contracts, criminal cases, and traffic violations. The curriculum also delves into advocacy techniques, alternative dispute resolution, and other practice areas permitted for paralegals. A comprehensive 140-hour field placement offers real-world legal experience. Graduates will be ready to take the provincial licensing exam and apply for registration with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO).
The LSO mandates licensing for all practicing paralegals. Fanshawe's program holds LSO accreditation. Licensing requires graduation from an approved program, passing the provincial exam, and demonstrating good character. As a licensed professional, you could establish your own practice serving clients directly or join legal teams at firms or government agencies. In either path, you'll apply your business acumen and legal knowledge to enhance access to justice.
Maintaining LSO licensure involves annual fees, professional liability insurance, continuing education requirements, and regular reporting. Prospective students should thoroughly review all licensing and maintenance obligations before enrolling in this program.
