Launch an exciting career path through Fanshawe's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program, which blends practical training with theoretical knowledge and technical instruction to prepare you for immediate career success.
The GIS curriculum features a project-driven, software-focused approach that establishes core GIS competencies while allowing specialization in geographic data fields. Students utilize state-of-the-art technology to cultivate expertise in remote sensing, object-oriented programming, spatial analysis and modeling, digital photogrammetry, map projections, web-based GIS, and CAD applications.
An optional four-month summer co-op placement with GIS-focused organizations provides real-world experience. Potential placements span government agencies, GIS software firms, and private sector companies employing GIS technology, offering invaluable industry connections and practical experience.
Graduates are equipped for diverse careers in land-based industries working with spatial and tabular data. This interdisciplinary program emphasizes current, high-level applied skills through software-intensive, project-based learning. Students develop core GIS competencies while implementing advanced GIS Science methodologies to solve spatial challenges, with opportunities to apply these technical skills to specialized fields like engineering, social sciences, humanities, community health, or other scientific disciplines.
All students must possess a PC laptop and reliable internet access, regardless of attending classes in-person or online.
Instruction is delivered through in-person classroom sessions, with all classes simultaneously streamed and recorded. Both full-time and part-time students can choose between live interactive webcasts or physical attendance, with archived recordings available for review.
