Discover how recreational and leisure activities can enhance life quality for individuals with disabilities, illnesses, and other challenges. Therapeutic Recreation professionals are allied health experts who create and deliver intentional, meaningful recreation programs to promote holistic wellness. Dalhousie's Therapeutic Recreation program holds the distinction of being Canada's first accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation exam to earn Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification.
This program develops skilled recreation therapists across three learning domains: cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior), preparing them for diverse CTRS roles. With small class sizes, students benefit from close collaboration with peers and instructors.
First-year studies introduce leisure concepts alongside foundational courses in sociology, psychology, anatomy, and physiology. Advanced years focus on specialized Therapeutic Recreation coursework, health requirements, and personalized electives. Sample courses include:
Inclusive Recreation Services
Therapeutic Recreation Counseling Methods
Group Leadership Dynamics
Therapeutic Recreation Administration
