Onajigawin Indigenous Services is rooted in Indigenous Knowledge and Pedagogy, employing a decolonized methodology for curriculum and assessment.
Indigenous communities across northwestern Ontario frequently face cultural, geographic, and systemic obstacles to accessing services. Confederation College's Onajigawin Indigenous Services program teaches strategies to effectively address these challenges. Students gain skills to assist individuals in connecting with essential services in Thunder Bay, the surrounding region, and worldwide.
Career paths focus on supporting families, individuals, and communities to enhance life quality, address issues, and coordinate services using multidisciplinary methods. The curriculum explores cultural safety and preservation; language and traditions; health across generations; Indigenous wellness and substance abuse prevention; child and family welfare; aging in social contexts; holistic family approaches; justice initiatives; advocacy work; governance structures; policy development; and additional relevant topics.
