The Humanities PhD program, housed in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture (CISSC), offers diverse interdisciplinary research opportunities at Concordia University. Candidates typically join with an MA or MFA degree, representing various backgrounds across humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. The program fosters a dynamic academic environment that promotes creative scholarship and cross-disciplinary solutions to contemporary challenges. Current student research explores subjects like digital media, Indigenous studies, global interconnectedness, and gender studies. Concordia boasts exceptional research facilities such as Milieux Institute, the Media History Research Centre, the Centre for Sensory Studies, and the Centre for Expanded Poetics. Those entering with an MFA or equivalent graduate qualification can engage in research-creation work that merges academic inquiry with artistic production across multiple mediums and formats.
The normal requirement is a master’s degree with high standing from a recognized university. The Humanities Program Committee will scrutinize the applicant’s academic background and proposed program of study in order to determine whether a) the applicant’s interests are truly interdisciplinary, and fall within the scope of the available faculty and facilities at Concordia, and b) the student’s record indicates that he or she is likely to be able to cope with a demanding program involving rigorous practice in more than one discipline.
