Delve into the rich heritage, traditions, and writings of Jewish people while gaining insight into their lived realities across history and in modern times. Examining ancient and contemporary languages, governance, thought systems, and legal frameworks, you'll contrast Jewish traditions with other faiths, investigate current contexts, and analyze how mystical practices, ceremonies, and philosophical thought interact with mainstream culture, gender studies, feminist movements, culinary traditions, moral principles, and spiritual practices.
While exploring all dimensions of Jewish life - including women's roles throughout different eras (Talmudic, medieval, modern) and the Holocaust - you'll profoundly reflect on Jewish identity and the experience of being an ethnic minority. You'll also have opportunities to enhance your Hebrew language skills.
With increasing focus on local fieldwork in Montreal, you'll engage directly with diverse Jewish communities and individuals transitioning away from religious observance.
Through the Azrieli Institute, you can access financial support for study programs in Israel. The Concordia Institute for Judaic Studies facilitates research projects and internships within Montreal's Jewish community, offering an academic perspective on religion that values cultural diversity, gender inclusivity, and hands-on experiential learning.
