Canada boasts nearly 25,000 officially recognized architectural heritage properties. Furthermore, heritage inventories document more than 200,000 sites, with approximately 2,000 new additions annually. The need for skilled professionals to preserve these important cultural assets continues to rise. Carleton University has already gained worldwide recognition for its leadership in this discipline. These diploma programs enhance our current professional degree offerings by specializing in architectural conservation techniques. The curriculum includes four credits dedicated to conservation theory and practical applications.
For the Type II diploma, students begin in the MArch program before transitioning to the diploma track in their second year. They complete two terms of foundational courses, then focus on a conservation-related thesis during their third MArch year. Graduates receive both an MArch degree and a conservation diploma.
The Type III diploma is available to students holding professional architecture degrees or qualifications in related fields. Participants complete all required diploma courses within a three-year period to obtain the credential, without enrolling in the MArch program.
