Our doctoral program is based in the School of Linguistics and Languages Studies (SLaLS). Highlighting language's crucial role in educational, professional, community, and social settings, the PhD curriculum concentrates on four key domains: second and foreign language instruction and acquisition, particularly Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL); the characteristics, acquisition, and pedagogy of written communication and literacy; and the examination of written, spoken, and multimodal texts. Candidates can combine elements from two distinct disciplines - Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies - to align with their academic and research objectives. This PhD offering stands out across North America since these two disciplines are usually separated into different academic units at other institutions.
