Carleton University's School of Linguistics and Language Studies offers the CTESL program, recognized as one of Canada's most established and prestigious TESL programs. This comprehensive program combines theoretical coursework with practical training, featuring classroom observation and guided teaching experiences across diverse educational environments. Students can strategically choose courses to complete CTESL concurrently with a four-year Honours degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, or other majors, enabling them to earn both their degree and certificate simultaneously. Alternatively, the program is available as a standalone post-degree certification.
Focusing primarily on adult English language education, the CTESL program prepares graduates for teaching opportunities both domestically and internationally. Within Canada, it serves as a respected credential for ESL instruction in post-secondary institutions, including private language schools, colleges, and universities. Internationally, the certification qualifies holders for teaching positions at all educational levels, from elementary and secondary schools to adult education programs.
