Exploring literature means engaging with history's most imaginative and eloquent minds as they ponder timeless questions: How do people build and maintain meaningful connections? What role does art serve? In what ways does language document and influence human existence? As an English student, you'll discover a rich literary heritage spanning centuries and continents, connecting diverse cultures worldwide. You'll also develop critical reading and writing techniques to better understand intricate texts and their historical contexts. The analytical and communication skills gained through English studies prove invaluable across professions—whether in education, government, law, technology, healthcare, or business. Equally important, literary studies equip you with frameworks to interpret and express your views on the vast array of written works shaping our world.
Our English Department provides coursework covering British, Canadian, and American literary traditions, Indigenous North American writings, and postcolonial/diasporic literatures from Africa, the Caribbean, and South Asia. You'll also study critical theories that scholars use to analyze literature's forms, historical contexts, and cultural significance.
