The Greek and Roman Studies (Classics) program offers a comprehensive exploration of European civilization's ancient foundations and their lasting influence on subsequent periods. This curriculum delves into diverse aspects of the ancient Mediterranean world, including literary works, historical events, philosophical thought, mythological traditions, religious practices, societal structures, technological advancements, artistic expressions, architectural achievements, and archaeological discoveries, with particular emphasis on Greek city-states and Roman society. Beyond understanding these historically significant civilizations that profoundly shaped our modern era, students can acquire proficiency in ancient Greek and Latin, engage with classical texts in their original forms or translated versions, and learn from Carleton's distinguished faculty with their wide-ranging scholarly expertise. As an interdisciplinary field, Classics cultivates versatile graduates equipped with critical research, analytical reasoning, persuasive argumentation, and effective communication skills - competencies valuable across all professions. Students may also pursue an Archaeology minor, concentrating on ancient global sites, artifacts, and excavation methodologies.
