Studying French in Cape Breton offers a unique experience. Beyond benefiting local businesses and enriching Canadian culture, mastering one of Canada's official languages under expert instructors creates opportunities across diverse fields including education, diplomacy, social services, translation, and government roles at both provincial and federal levels.
As a global language spoken by millions worldwide, French serves as a valuable tool for professional, organizational, and everyday communication. Our French minor or concentration provides comprehensive language instruction from beginner to advanced levels, complemented by studies in French literature, cultural studies, and linguistics.
Students can pursue a French studies concentration within three-year general BA or BACS programs. Alternatively, those enrolled in four-year BA or BACS degrees can complement their studies with a French minor.
French can also be taken as a 24-credit academic subject in the three-year BACS program or incorporated into an area major for four-year BA/BACS degrees. Our French courses, ranging from introductory to advanced levels, count as electives toward other degree requirements. Additionally, we offer an 18-credit Certificate in French Language Proficiency.
