As a French language student at McMaster University, you'll dive into one of Canada's official tongues and a globally spoken language used by millions across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, North America, and Asia. Our focus on "Francophonie et Diversité" (the French-speaking World and Diversity) exposes you to the vibrant literary and cultural heritage of Francophone societies.

French serves as both the teaching language and primary means of communication within our Department, helping you enhance your proficiency. Annually, we host language assistants from France who support students in refining their abilities. Additionally, program participants can opt to spend their third year studying abroad at a French or Quebecois university through our exchange program.
