The Department of Communication, Popular Culture, and Film provides four distinct academic programs: Business Communication, Media and Communication Studies, Film Studies, and Popular Culture. Students can pursue a four-year BA Honours degree, a four-year BA with Major, or a three-year BA Pass degree in any of these programs. The Department also collaborates with community colleges to enable students to obtain an honours degree in Popular Culture alongside a college diploma or certificate.
This curriculum examines popular culture through an interdisciplinary lens. Students engage with critical and historical courses that analyze diverse forms of popular culture, both mass-mediated and non-mass-mediated. These encompass television, music, gaming, advertising, social media, sports, festivals, literature, and cinema, studied within their political, historical, economic, and artistic frameworks. Through coursework in communication, film, Canadian studies, and political science, students gain comprehensive insight into both contemporary and historical popular culture expressions.
