The Hispanic and Latin American Studies program delivers an in-depth exploration of Iberian (Spanish and Portuguese) and Latin American cultures. Participants gain advanced language skills and deep cultural understanding through a transnational, interdisciplinary framework. The HLAS curriculum features diverse courses that broaden academic perspectives and enable cross-disciplinary learning. Most students pursue dual degrees, combining HLAS with majors or minors in other languages, linguistics, or various fields, including specializations in Romance Linguistics or Comparative Studies in Romance Literatures and Cultures. The program develops critical analysis and practical skills for both academic research and professional careers, blending traditional lectures with digital learning, interactive tutorials, and hands-on experiences through internships and community projects.
Available as a combined major, this program emphasizes Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking societies. These languages have grown significantly in global importance and economic relevance. You'll acquire thorough knowledge of these key world regions while pursuing your specific academic interests. Our teaching approach combines classroom instruction with online components, intimate tutorial groups, and practical applications through internships and community engagement.
