The Department strives to equip students with an in-depth understanding of both spoken and written French, along with the rich literary and cultural traditions of France and Francophone regions. Alongside French-taught classes, the Department provides English-language courses (labeled MLLC) that may count toward a French Studies degree. Our curriculum covers French language instruction, translation studies, linguistics, and global Francophone literature.
Civilization and culture courses explore the interconnected development of painting, architecture, music, historical milestones, and literary works across French history. Students can immerse themselves in French-speaking environments through various programs, including intensive spring and summer courses in Quebec.
