The Department strives to equip students with an extensive understanding of both spoken and written French, alongside deep insights into French and Francophone literature and cultures. Alongside French-taught classes, the Department provides English-language courses (labeled MLLC) that may count toward a French Studies degree. Our curriculum covers French language instruction, translation studies, linguistics, and literature from Francophone nations globally.
Courses on culture and civilization explore the art, architecture, music, and historical developments that have accompanied literary works across different eras in France. Students can also pursue immersive learning experiences in French-speaking environments, including short-term spring and summer programs in Quebec.
