The Department of Dramatic Arts (DART), within the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA), explores the discipline as both a cultural and educational practice through study, application, and critical examination. DART provides a BA Honours in Dramatic Arts, with specialized Concentrations available for honours students in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, Performance, Production and Design, and Theatre Praxis. Additionally, the department offers a four-year BA with Major in Dramatic Arts, a three-year BA Pass degree, a Certificate program in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre, and a Minor in Dramatic Arts for students outside the DART program.
Central to these degree programs are courses that blend theory and practice (praxis), combining lectures and studio work to examine the cultural and historical connections between creativity and analysis.
Every DART degree program emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, providing students with a comprehensive foundation in performance, design, and technical skills while fostering critical thinking, theatre history knowledge, dramaturgy, and dramatic literature studies.
DART organizes an annual performance season featuring student-conceived and executed productions, guided by faculty, guest artists, and professional technical staff. Students engage deeply with theatre through collaborative work as actors and creative/production team members.
