This combined theoretical and hands-on program provides insights into children, adolescents, and youth by examining: diversity, social disparities, special needs, family structures, cultural backgrounds, social environments, educational settings, peer relationships, community influences, media and pop culture, and global concerns. This comprehensive foundation creates opportunities for engaging with young individuals across multiple professional roles.
Explore and analyze childhood and adolescence through interdisciplinary perspectives. Our distinctive curriculum incorporates psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and criminology – along with other fields – to develop a thorough understanding of young people and their viewpoints.
The Child and Youth Studies Department (CHYS) provides four-year Honours BA and Major BA programs, a three-year BA degree, and a combined BA (Honours)/BEd (Primary-Junior) program. These interdisciplinary programs blend theoretical frameworks with practical applications to study children and youth within cultural, economic, legal, familial, educational, peer-group, and community contexts. Drawing from psychology, sociology, anthropology, criminology, education, and cultural studies, our academic approach synthesizes multiple disciplines to foster a holistic understanding of childhood and adolescence.
