This collaborative program aims to develop students with robust scientific and technical knowledge while also providing comprehensive training in business and communication. As an innovative offering, the Joint Degree program underwent rigorous evaluation to guarantee it fulfills the academic and technical standards set by both participating institutions. A Program Advisory Committee conducts annual reviews to maintain the program's high quality.
The curriculum responds to the growing demand for professionals who can integrate technical skills with knowledge in management, production, regulatory affairs, and intellectual property. It delivers essential competencies needed for various roles within biotechnology organizations.
The joint initiative emphasizes interdisciplinary education and promotes partnerships that enhance undergraduate learning.
Biotechnology students gain practical experience through placements with industry collaborators, private biotech firms, and government organizations during their studies. The program requires participation in cooperative education, with students completing four four-month work terms (totaling sixteen months) to earn their degree. Two terms occur during BCIT studies and two at UBC.
