The merging of Germany and the establishment of the European Union were seen by numerous observers as clear indicators of an emerging globalized society, requiring us to adopt post-national perspectives. However, national stories have pushed back against this notion, particularly visible during Europe's financial turmoil. People across European countries cling to their national roots rather than embracing what Nietzsche termed the 'good European.' Germany's growing influence in the EU – welcomed by some, criticized by others – demonstrates that its historical impact extends beyond its difficult history: Germany remains and will continue to be a significant player in our current era. Consequently, we maintain that German Studies retains its importance long after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The German Studies program provides classes in these areas: Language, Literature, Film Studies, and Cultural Studies, along with specialized Independent Studies. Third-year options rotate every three years. Literature, Film, and Cultural Studies courses are conducted in English. Enrolled students who've finished GER 102 or similar will participate in weekly German-language lab sessions for textual analysis and discussion. These labs also include written assignments in German.
