Political science explores and examines potential outcomes for nations and their people, including prospects for peace in conflict-torn regions, democratic transitions in authoritarian regimes, economic fairness within capitalist structures, and cooperation among sovereign states. The examination of political systems has long been fundamental to education aimed at preserving and enhancing societal well-being. Ancient civilizations like China, Greece, and Rome considered political engagement among humanity's most noble pursuits. For thousands of years, Indigenous communities worldwide have developed distinct and impactful political traditions. Regardless of awareness, every individual engages with political processes.
Algoma University's four-year BA in Political Science emphasizes three key disciplines: Canadian governance, public administration and policy, global political systems and international affairs, along with political philosophy, theory, and economic systems.
The curriculum integrates Indigenous perspectives, concepts, and research methods. Students develop skills to recognize crucial social institutions, influential factors, and ideological currents that drive or hinder societal transformation. The program trains learners to methodically, thoroughly, and critically assess alternative interpretations of political events, while developing insights into power dynamics and influence.
