Algoma University offers Canada's sole four-year Bachelor of Arts program in Community, Economic, and Social Development (CESD). This unique interdisciplinary degree equips students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge to drive positive transformations in their communities and beyond. The program combines elements from CESD, social work, sociology, political science, geography, economics, and business administration, giving students a comprehensive worldview. Through this broad curriculum, learners gain the expertise to promote social justice, advocate for economic equality, protect human rights, and support smaller urban, rural, northern, and Indigenous communities. The program also offers optional minors in environmental sustainability and social justice with globalization.
During their third year, students undertake a 150-hour practical placement, followed by a more intensive 300-hour placement and major project in their fourth year. Past placements have included renowned organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Children's Aid Society, Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, NORDIK Institute, United Way, and Ontario Trillium Foundation. These real-world experiences enable students to implement classroom theories, champion community initiatives, and develop analytical approaches, making this an exceptionally practical and engaging degree program.
Students have to complete higher Secondary School Certificate.
