The Peace and Development Studies program focuses on approaches to advance peace, human rights, and environmental sustainability. It entails critically examining power and opportunity disparities that fuel conflicts at global and local scales, social instability, and ecological harm. Learners will explore the systemic roots of racially and gender-based violence, environmental emergencies, displacement, economic hardship, disputes over resources, and inequalities across generations. The interconnected solutions encompass empowerment and autonomy, sustainable lifestyles, positive development initiatives, and peacemaking and peacebuilding efforts. These necessitate knowledge of theories and techniques for detecting, evaluating, and addressing conflict and environmental decline. The program critically evaluates the shortcomings and underlying assumptions of conventional development approaches. Students will apply social theory within an interdisciplinary, practical context, operating at local, national, and global levels.
