This program is designed for individuals who have completed a four-year psychology degree from an accredited institution. It offers a fifth year of guided training and formal education to equip students for their subsequent supervised internship, a requirement before applying for general psychologist registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. The Master of Professional Psychology delivers a full-year curriculum focused on:
establishing fundamental professional skills, expanding upon the knowledge gained through an APAC-recognized undergraduate program;
applying research-backed methods aligned with the scientist-practitioner framework;
maintaining a comprehensive, generalist perspective; and
developing core competencies as specified in APAC's accreditation criteria.
Instruction incorporates diverse approaches such as lectures, workshops, practical skill development, online components, and supervised clinical placements at both the University's Northfields Psychology Clinic and external sites. The program prioritizes hands-on learning through demonstration sessions, recorded therapy assessments, case studies, role-playing exercises, and reflective feedback sessions.
Students accepted into the course must have successfully completed a four year, or three year plus a fourth year, Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)-accredited sequence in psychology from the University of Wollongong onshore or internationally, within the previous 10 years, and be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia as a provisional psychologist.
Places in this course are limited. Entry is competitive and is based on academic merit and personal suitability.
Selection procedures include:
satisfactory completion of the application form and a personal statement;
referee reports from at least two referees;
confirmation of original degree certificates;
completion of an interview with a panel; and
an average mark of 70% across all psychology subjects for the four years of previous study.
