The Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma and Recovery Practice addresses challenges particularly relevant to Australia's Indigenous communities. This program equips graduates with specialized skills to adopt trauma-informed approaches in their work. As an interdisciplinary course, it teaches students to employ critical analysis, teamwork, and sound judgment when assisting individuals and communities - including children and families - affected by traumatic experiences. A key emphasis is placed on implementing Indigenous principles of social and emotional wellbeing, along with traditional healing frameworks. The curriculum examines trauma through both Aboriginal and Western perspectives, exploring root causes while addressing historical, cumulative, and contemporary trauma manifestations. Special attention is given to understanding how racism and other stressors affect Indigenous health outcomes, including the physiological and clinical responses to trauma. Students will develop practical skills for trauma response at both individual and community levels, learning to deliver services through a trauma-informed lens.
A recognised diploma, degree, graduate certificate, or in the absence of formal qualifications, provide evidence of professional equivalence that demonstrates experience working within Indigenous communities. All applicants are required to provide a professional resume and provide a personal statement of no more than 200 words that describes the skills and experience that you have that will make you successful in this course.
