Mining engineers utilize scientific principles, earth sciences, and engineering technologies to effectively locate and recover mineral resources, transforming natural deposits into useful commodities. These extracted materials form the foundation of manufacturing and infrastructure projects, with ongoing global need for rare metals and industrial minerals. A critical aspect of mining engineering involves safety protocols, where expertise in mine planning and operations protects workers, optimizes production, and facilitates environmental restoration after mining concludes.
The program begins with a shared foundational year that introduces various engineering disciplines before specialization. This initial phase establishes core competencies in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computational methods, engineering fundamentals, material sciences, and technical communication. Students then concentrate on their selected specialization starting in the second academic year.
The curriculum incorporates a 12-week practical industry internship. Through the Professional Options Program, students can potentially earn academic recognition for relevant domestic or international work experience.
Engineering professionals operate across diverse sectors including: resource extraction, construction, aerospace, telecommunications, energy production and distribution, sustainable energy solutions, water management systems, automated manufacturing, and transportation infrastructure development.
Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.
In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.
