The History Honours program offers a one-year full-time or two-year part-time specialization following an undergraduate degree. Students complete a 15,000-word dissertation on their chosen topic, participate in the HIST4101 Historiography seminar (worth six points), and attend three semester-long seminars covering specific historical themes. These seminars involve intensive study of texts centered around particular historical periods, methodologies, or themes, with small-group instruction from field experts actively engaged in research. While demanding, this program serves as an ideal bridge between undergraduate studies and independent scholarly work. The dissertation allows students to conduct in-depth research under close supervision, with regular meetings to discuss progress and receive guidance, though the final work remains entirely the student's own - representing the academic pinnacle of their undergraduate journey. Many graduates pursue advanced degrees, while others apply their enhanced historical understanding and research skills to careers in education, business, government, or cultural sectors.
