The Master of Orthoptics equips students with comprehensive expertise, practical abilities, and professional experience needed to thrive as orthoptists within the diverse eye healthcare field. As Australia's sole postgraduate orthoptics program, the UTS Master of Orthoptics stands unique.
This program employs a learner-centered approach that blends academic foundations with real-world application, leveraging strong connections with orthoptic professionals, vision care specialists, and industry partners. Throughout their studies, students complete clinical rotations across multiple settings such as hospitals, private clinics, and rehabilitation centers. The curriculum includes mandatory placements in rural, regional, and Indigenous communities across Australia, with potential for international clinical experiences. On-campus instruction occurs in the Graduate School of Health's cutting-edge facilities, established in 2019. Participants develop leadership capabilities while learning from globally respected educators, researchers, and clinical pioneers implementing innovative techniques and technologies.
Career Paths
Graduates can pursue diverse opportunities in hospital systems, private practices, and community health organizations, delivering pediatric and adult vision services, neuro-ophthalmic care, and low vision rehabilitation. Additional prospects exist within ophthalmic research and industry sectors.
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.
Selected applicants are required to undertake a short interview with a panel. Applicants are assessed in the areas of communication skills, interpersonal skills, interest in eye health, and commitment to orthoptics as a career.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.
