The Master of Forensic Science (Extension) stands as one of Australia's premier programs in this specialized scientific field, blending practical advanced forensic training with the development of professional and research expertise. Our evidence-based program emphasizes hands-on, scenario-driven learning in state-of-the-art facilities that mirror actual forensic environments, including renowned Crime Scene Simulation Labs and professional-grade laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technology.
This extended program builds upon the standard Master's curriculum by incorporating an extra 24 credit points of elective subjects, allowing completion within two years of full-time study. Designed to prepare students for leadership positions in forensic science, the curriculum draws from the expertise of distinguished academics and professionals at UTS's internationally recognized Centre for Forensic Science, alongside input from industry partners. Consequently, the program content aligns with the evolving demands of the global forensic science sector.
Career Pathways
Graduates qualify for positions with various organizations including Australian Federal Police, state law enforcement, ASIO, CSIRO, ANSTO, border protection agencies, and private forensic firms. Career opportunities vary based on elective selections, with potential roles encompassing criminalist, trace evidence analyst, forensic toxicology expert, DNA specialist, crime scene investigator, investigative team supervisor, arson investigator, and fingerprint examiner.
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.
Entry into the course requires the completion of a bachelor's, master's, graduate diploma, graduate certificate qualification in chemical sciences, biochemistry and cell biology, human biology, forensic science or medical science.
The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.
