The flexible engineering major allows students to create a customized interdisciplinary engineering program accredited by Engineers Australia. This option also gives undecided students a chance to explore various engineering fields before committing to a specific major (provided they meet academic prerequisites).
To complete the flexible engineering major, students must pursue at least three specialized 'threads' or sub-majors to gain sufficient expertise. Each thread comprises an advanced subject from elective options along with its prerequisites. These advanced subjects are usually final-year courses from established majors, typically taken in the last three study sessions. Students may alternatively choose pre-designed sub-majors for focused specialization.
Those planning to switch from the flexible program to a specific major should follow their desired major's first-year curriculum – generally including an introductory course and related discipline subjects. Exploring introductory courses from different fields during the first year can help with this decision. Completed coursework may count as electives when transferring to a designated major.
