This program equips students for successful careers in scientific research or industry roles. It emphasizes both the quantitative aspects of marine and Antarctic studies and how scientific knowledge translates into practical industry applications and management strategies. Participants develop professional scientific competencies, including experience with peer review processes, teamwork, and hands-on fieldwork, lab work, or industry procedures. Graduates will possess the ability to evaluate and address complex challenges, effectively communicate findings to diverse groups, and articulate the societal importance of marine and Antarctic research. These capabilities enable alumni to tackle worldwide concerns including sustainable fisheries, climate adaptation, and ocean conservation. Numerous program completers pursue advanced research degrees, specializing in IMAS' focal disciplines such as polar science, marine ecosystems, fisheries management, climate impacts, Antarctic policy, and earth-ocean interactions.
All international students wishing to study at the University must meet the minimum English language and academic entry requirements. Admission to most postgraduate by coursework courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor's degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies and meet any prerequisite subjects to be eligible for an offer. To be admitted to study the Master of Marine and Antarctic Science you must have a Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science or Graduate Diploma in Marine and Antarctic Science from the University of Tasmania, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary education institution. An example of an equivalent qualification is a Bachelor of Science with a major in life sciences (such as biology, environmental science, zoology, plant science, marine biology, ecology etc).
In addition, specifically for the Governance and Policy specialisation, students may be admitted with a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a governance and policy field from a recognised tertiary education institution with evidence of completion of units at undergraduate level that are related to life sciences.
