The healthcare and medical science fields are growing rapidly, creating more job opportunities. The Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Medical Science) provides the core knowledge needed for a fulfilling career in healthcare or medical research. This four-year program builds your understanding of human anatomy and physiology, from microscopic components to entire bodily systems. It prepares you for immediate entry into medical research graduate programs and offers strong preparation for the University of Sydney's graduate medicine or dentistry degrees. Your first year will focus on foundational sciences: chemistry, biology, and mathematics, along with elective courses. These introductory subjects provide the necessary background for clinical studies in subsequent years. The second year includes essential medical science coursework in physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, anatomy, immunobiology, and pathology, plus optional science or non-science electives. During your third and fourth years, you'll select specialized medical science courses and complete a comprehensive interdisciplinary project. Throughout the Bachelor of Advanced Studies, you'll pursue a second major (detailed below) while exploring various disciplines through advanced coursework, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional or research projects. Graduates will be well-prepared for medical science research careers. Those aiming for medical research positions should consider completing an honors year (or equivalent) followed by doctoral studies through a PhD program.
