Infectious diseases emerge from complex interactions between microbial pathogens and their hosts. The Infectious Diseases major offers an interdisciplinary approach to studying how these pathogens affect human health across various scales - from molecular and cellular interactions to individual patients and entire communities.
This program first establishes the importance of infectious diseases within the 'One Health' framework, highlighting the interconnected relationships between human, animal, and environmental health. Students explore the dual nature of microorganisms (including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists) as both essential for health and potential disease-causing agents. The curriculum examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying infections, with special attention to pathogen virulence factors, immune system evasion strategies, tissue damage processes, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging control methods. The program further investigates disease patterns and outbreak epidemiology in populations.
As part of this course, you'll undertake advanced science units designed to push your limits through rigorous challenges, specialized projects, and accelerated learning experiences.
This program provides outstanding opportunities for ambitious science students. Through a combination of lectures, independent research, and intensive problem-solving, our Advanced stream equips you with the skills for a fulfilling scientific career.
The Bachelor of Science (Advanced) is an undergraduate program that cultivates analytical and critical thinking abilities, preparing students to contribute to research fields and global problem-solving. The curriculum begins with core units covering fundamental scientific principles, followed by specialization through a chosen stream, program, or major from the Science disciplines, complemented by a minor or second major from either science or interdisciplinary fields. Students also complete Open Learning Environment units and electives to fulfill degree requirements.
For those seeking deeper engagement, an optional Honours year provides intensive research training through an independent project and specialized coursework, serving as excellent preparation for PhD studies or research-focused careers.
