China stands among the world's most significant civilizations, alongside European and Middle Eastern traditions. The Chinese Studies program equips students with comprehensive knowledge of Chinese society and culture, fundamental language proficiency for navigating Chinese-speaking environments, essential skills for China-focused careers, and research capabilities in Chinese studies.

The modern Chinese language program accommodates diverse proficiency levels, from absolute beginners to those familiar with standard and regional Chinese dialects. It emphasizes building practical communication skills at introductory and intermediate levels, including professional Chinese. Advanced coursework develops research and academic writing abilities in Chinese, while classical Chinese instruction combines with exploration of pre-modern literature and philosophy.

All students, regardless of prior language experience, can access the department's complete curriculum, including exchange opportunities and intensive summer programs at Peking University.

From complete beginners to heritage speakers, students can pursue Chinese Studies through honors and postgraduate levels. Graduates may enter careers in international affairs, global corporations, media, tourism, non-governmental organizations, academic research, or China-related education.
