All students could be eligible for the honours program, irrespective of their starting language proficiency. To gain entry into honours, students must complete a major in Germanic Studies while maintaining a minimum 70% average.
Pursuing honours can serve as a foundation for an academic career or professional research. The honours program combines seminar participation with the development of a concise thesis based on independent research, guided by a faculty specialist in your chosen area.
Every honours program blends seminars with thesis work. Certain programs feature three seminars paired with a briefer thesis (12,000-15,000 words), while others include two seminars with a more extensive thesis of up to 20,000 words. Seminar assessments are conducted by the instructor, though some departments involve a second faculty member in evaluating seminar work. Each thesis undergoes review by at least two field experts besides the supervisor, who provide comprehensive feedback and preliminary grading.
