Grasping the significance of the Arab world has become crucial in today's global landscape. As the fifth most commonly spoken language worldwide, Arabic holds official status at the United Nations and serves as the sacred tongue for over a billion Muslims, along with numerous Christians and Jews. The evolving political and economic landscape across Arab nations and the Middle East, coupled with the globalization of industries and careers, has elevated Arabic language proficiency - including comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing - to an increasingly valuable asset. Furthermore, Arabic boasts a profound literary and cultural legacy that warrants dedicated scholarly attention.
The Arabic Language and Cultures major prepares students to appreciate the political, social, and cultural significance of the Arab world and its intricate regional influence globally. This program emphasizes both language acquisition and cultural understanding, welcoming students with or without previous Arabic knowledge. Alongside language studies, students can explore diverse offerings in Arabic literature, culture, art, and cinema.
Our instructional approach prioritizes active student engagement, practical communication, and cultural immersion, fostering both Arabic language fluency and cultural awareness. Students will acquire foundational knowledge to comprehend the evolving diversity of Arab societies, while developing skills to undertake cross-regional initiatives and examine geographical-cultural divides.
