The Bachelor of Arts honours program serves as both a bridge to postgraduate studies and the crowning achievement of undergraduate education. This intensive year can mark the completion of your academic journey while expanding your intellectual horizons, refining research skills, and enhancing analytical and communication abilities. It equips you with the personal and professional competencies necessary to successfully execute a research project. Ideal for undergraduates with a single major, honours also lays the foundation for careers in academia or professional research. The program combines seminar participation with an independent research thesis, guided by a faculty expert in your chosen field.
The Gender Studies honours curriculum includes: An 18,000-20,000 word thesis developed collaboratively with an assigned supervisor, Active involvement in an Honours mini-conference featuring peer feedback on 20-minute thesis presentations, Completion of Arguing the Point (ATP) - a unit focused on thesis development and research methodologies, and Selection of one seminar-based coursework unit from approved 4000-level options. Final grading weights 60% to the thesis and 40% to coursework components.
This program enables students to hone their critical thinking through self-directed research on personally meaningful topics. The substantial thesis project, supervised by an active researcher, provides invaluable experience in designing and executing independent scholarly work. Through close mentorship, students sharpen their research focus and analytical perspectives, demonstrating the capabilities essential for advanced academic pursuits.
