The European Studies program explores Europe's societies, politics, and cultures. Our courses examine contemporary Europe, including its challenges, triumphs, diversity, conflicts, accomplishments, and global connections, along with historical contexts shaping current affairs. We analyze both the European Union - the planet's most sophisticated supranational federation and progressive global force - and the broader European continent. This interdisciplinary major incorporates knowledge from experts in French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, and Political Economy.
Students may pursue European Studies as either a major or minor, or select individual elective units. No European language proficiency is required, as all instruction occurs in English using English materials. However, we strongly recommend pairing European Studies with language study through a complementary major or minor in a European language.
The program offers exchange opportunities at our European partner universities. Advanced project-based courses, including credit-bearing internships, help students develop professional competencies for addressing modern European challenges.
For deeper specialization, students can complete a fourth year through either honors research or advanced project-based coursework that further develops professional capabilities in European contexts.
