China stands among the world's most significant civilizations, alongside European and Middle Eastern traditions. The Chinese Studies program equips you with comprehensive knowledge of Chinese society and culture, fundamental language skills for navigating Chinese-speaking environments, professional capabilities for China-related careers, and research proficiency in Chinese studies.
The modern Chinese language program accommodates diverse proficiency levels, from absolute beginners to those familiar with standard and regional Chinese dialects. It emphasizes building practical communication skills at introductory and intermediate levels, including business Chinese. Advanced coursework develops research and academic writing abilities in Chinese, while classical Chinese instruction combines with pre-modern literature and philosophy studies.
All students, regardless of prior language experience, can access our full curriculum, including exchange opportunities and intensive summer programs at Peking University.
Whether starting from scratch or possessing existing language skills, you can pursue Chinese Studies through to honors or postgraduate levels. Graduates find careers in international relations, global corporations, media, tourism, NGOs, academic research, and China-focused education.
