The Biblical Studies and Classical Hebrew major teaches you to read both the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and New Testament with greater insight and responsibility, covering narrative, legal, poetic, wisdom, prophetic, and apocalyptic texts. Introductory units use English translations while teaching interpretive methods to grasp these texts' original meanings - the basis for all deeper analysis. Advanced units build on these skills while introducing specialized approaches for different biblical genres. You'll have the opportunity to study classical Hebrew, gaining the ability to read scriptures in their original language. These language courses cover various forms of ancient Hebrew, primarily focusing on biblical texts but also including the Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient inscriptions, rabbinic writings, and medieval biblical commentaries. Classical Hebrew study prepares students for postgraduate research by developing advanced biblical analysis skills. Regardless of your unit selection, completing this major will equip you with tools for deeper understanding of biblical texts within their historical, literary, and cultural contexts.
