Marking its centennial anniversary in 2017, the University's Japanese Studies Department stands among the earliest established programs of its type in English-speaking countries. This program provides comprehensive instruction in both Japanese language and cultural studies, equipping students to engage meaningfully in our diverse global society.
Through extensive partnerships with Japanese universities, students can participate in transformative exchange programs abroad, significantly enhancing their linguistic abilities and cultural understanding.
Cultural courses utilize authentic Japanese materials to explore diverse facets of Japan's heritage, from ancient traditions to modern pop culture, spanning historical, literary, and contemporary perspectives.
Beginners will develop fundamental Japanese literacy and conversational skills, while advanced students can achieve near-fluency by graduation.
Academic progress follows tailored pathways outlined in study unit tables, accommodating varying proficiency levels. Successful completion of any pathway leads to a Japanese Studies major qualification.
