Marking its centennial in 2017, the University's Japanese Studies Department stands among the earliest established programs of its type in English-speaking countries. This program provides comprehensive instruction in both Japanese language and cultural studies, equipping students to engage meaningfully in our diverse global society.
Through extensive partnerships with Japanese universities, students can participate in transformative exchange programs abroad, significantly enhancing their linguistic abilities and cultural understanding.
Cultural courses utilize authentic Japanese resources to explore diverse facets of Japan's heritage and modern society, spanning historical, literary, and contemporary popular culture studies.

Beginners will develop fundamental Japanese literacy and conversational skills for daily interactions, while advanced students can achieve near-fluent language proficiency by graduation.

The curriculum offers tailored learning pathways in the unit of study tables, accommodating varying language competencies. Successful completion of any pathway leads to a Japanese Studies major qualification.
