Studying History prepares you to comprehend transformation, examine issues from multiple viewpoints, and evaluate various forms of evidence.
Your first year centers around The History Workshop, where you'll participate in an intimate seminar focusing on a specific era and location as a springboard for analyzing social, cultural, political, or economic shifts. This course immerses you in historical methodology while developing essential skills through an engaging, collaborative setting. The Workshop is paired with global history surveys covering the last millennium, giving you comprehensive context for understanding change and drawing comparisons.
During your second and third years, you'll investigate diverse themes - from gender and conflict to governance and artistic movements, spanning intellectual history to culinary traditions - across different periods and regions, from medieval times to contemporary society, and from Asian and Australian settings to European and American contexts. You'll enjoy flexibility in selecting your preferred historical focuses. As Australia's most extensive history program, the University of Sydney provides exceptional breadth of choice.
The program concludes with a culminating experience where, based on your preferences, you can delve into historiography, conduct in-depth independent research, or collaborate with external organizations to apply historical expertise in real-world contexts.
