The European Studies program explores Europe's societies, politics, and cultures. Our courses examine contemporary Europe, including its challenges, triumphs, diversity, conflicts, accomplishments, and global connections, along with historical contexts shaping current affairs. We analyze both the European Union - the planet's most sophisticated supranational federation and progressive global force - and the broader European continent. This interdisciplinary major incorporates knowledge from experts in French, German, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, and Political Economy.
Students may pursue European Studies as a primary or secondary specialization, or select individual elective courses. No European language proficiency is required, as all instruction occurs in English using English materials. However, we strongly recommend pairing European Studies with language acquisition through a complementary European language major or minor.
Participants also have opportunities for study abroad at our European partner institutions. Advanced coursework, including our credit-bearing internship program, helps develop professional competencies for addressing modern European challenges.
For deeper specialization, students can undertake a fourth-year honors program with independent research or select advanced project-based courses to further refine professional capabilities.
