This five-year program provides an extensive and adaptable combined degree that certifies you as an accredited social worker while enabling you to broaden your qualifications with complementary majors and minors alongside the Bachelor of Social Work. Although the combined degree mandates a major or minor in Sociology, or a minor in Social Policy, you have the flexibility to select additional majors or minors in diverse fields like diversity studies, gender studies, Indigenous studies, or philosophy. The curriculum integrates studies in social sciences, social policy, and social work theory and practice, with a particular focus on Australian and international social welfare studies. During the final two years, all students complete the professional social work program, featuring two supervised fieldwork placements in various settings under the guidance of expert practitioners. We establish field education learning goals throughout the program, cultivating values, skills, and knowledge that progress from foundational to advanced levels, ensuring graduates meet the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Practice Standards.
This major equips you with essential skills for academic and professional success, including identifying key aspects of policies or practices, uncovering core issues in debates, thinking and communicating precisely, evaluating arguments rigorously, and constructing compelling cases. You'll critically engage with historical and contemporary texts, formulate philosophical questions, and assess potential solutions. As a philosophy student, you'll master conceptual distinctions, applying them effectively in philosophical studies and broader intellectual pursuits. The major fosters interpretive sensitivity and cultural awareness by examining diverse traditions and eras. You'll practice intellectual integrity by carefully analyzing arguments and engage in meaningful discussions on significant topics with respect and open-mindedness.
