This five-year program provides an extensive and adaptable combined degree that certifies you as an accredited social worker while enabling you to broaden your qualifications with complementary majors and minors alongside the Bachelor of Social Work. While the combined degree mandates a major or minor in Sociology, or a minor in Social Policy, you have the flexibility to select additional majors or minors in diverse fields like diversity studies, gender studies, Aboriginal Studies, or philosophy. The curriculum integrates studies in social sciences, social policy, and social work theory and practice, with a strong focus on Australian and comparative social welfare research. During the final two years, all students complete the professional social work program, which involves two supervised fieldwork placements in various settings under expert practitioners. Field education learning goals are developed throughout the program, fostering values, skills, and knowledge that progress from beginner level to meeting the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Practice Standards.
The Germanic Studies major centers on German language and culture, covering literature, film, history, and society. Whether you're starting from scratch or have prior experience with German, you can pursue this major.
German language courses are available at multiple proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced. The program aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR: A1 - C2), ensuring your language skills are internationally recognized and transferable.
Cultural studies include seminars on German literature, applied linguistics, film, history, and society spanning the 17th century to today. These seminars provide deep insights into German-speaking nations and their heritage. You can also join exchange programs with universities in Bamberg, Berlin, Cologne, Constance, Freiburg, Munich, and Vienna as part of your studies.
The Germanic Studies major pairs well with any Arts and Social Sciences major, as well as with Law, Business, and Science programs. If you're not majoring in German, you can opt for it as a minor or take elective German courses. For those who have completed undergraduate studies, the Diploma in Language Studies offers an opportunity to continue learning German.
Graduates gain a thorough understanding of German culture and society, opening doors to career opportunities in Australia and abroad, or further academic pursuits like Honours and Postgraduate Studies.
