The six-month full-time (or equivalent part-time) Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies covers museum history, theory, and practical applications. This program employs an interdisciplinary teaching method for core subjects while offering a wide selection of elective courses across departments and faculties. Students will cultivate a nuanced understanding of the social, cultural, and political challenges in the museum sector while receiving practical training for professional careers.
By interacting with the University's exceptional museums and collections, alongside industry leaders, students experience a dynamic setting for museological study and skill development. The program actively incorporates on-campus institutions like UQ Art Museum, UQ Anthropology Museum, and the R. D. Milns Antiquities Museum, providing firsthand exposure to current museum operations.
Professional development opportunities include short-term internships or placements where students complete practical projects that count toward their final evaluation. Recent placements have included prestigious institutions such as Queensland Art GalleryGOMA, Queensland Museum, Ipswich Art Gallery, UQ Art Museum, State Library of Queensland, as well as renowned international museums in London, New York, and Tokyo.
