This program is ideal for individuals looking to enter public health or those currently working in public health or related fields who aim to advance their careers or expand their expertise. Students will explore core public health principles and practices while having the option to specialize in advanced training areas provided by the University of Melbourne. The Master of Public Health programs at the University of Melbourne are taught by highly experienced faculty members who are leaders in their respective public health disciplines.
Participants in this specialization will learn to use economic theory and analytical methods to tackle public health challenges. The curriculum provides foundational microeconomics knowledge, enabling students to assess and debate public health policies from an economic standpoint. Students will gain the ability to interpret economic data and may also acquire skills for conducting independent health economics research. They can choose to build expertise in assessing the cost-effectiveness of new interventions (via Economic Evaluation 1 and 2) or analyzing health policies and systems (through Health Economics 1 and 2). The competencies developed in this specialization prepare students for leadership roles in resource allocation, public health management, and policy development, applicable both in Australia and internationally. Career opportunities in health economics include positions such as health analyst, economist, project officer, policy advisor, pharmacoeconomics specialist, research assistant, or academic researcher. These skills are also valuable for any role involving healthcare budgeting or resource management.
