The Master of Music (Orchestral Performance) is an innovative practice-oriented degree that combines orchestral, chamber, and solo performance training.
This two-year course links students with industry experts through collaborations between the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and leading professional orchestras like the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Australian World Orchestra. Students will join Conservatorium ensembles while gaining real-world experience through side-by-side projects with professionals and optional placements with partner organizations.
The program offers extensive development across solo, orchestral, and chamber music performance: all three disciplines form the core curriculum, with additional orchestral or chamber music electives available.
Weekly individual lessons throughout the degree provide advanced training to hone orchestral instrument skills, culminating in semester-end performances featuring concertos and recitals of solo and ensemble works.
Students will also develop specialized orchestral expertise by:
Performing in symphonic ensembles each semester
Receiving focused audition preparation through core and elective courses
Deepening their understanding and interpretation of orchestral literature
Working in the state-of-the-art Ian Potter Southbank Centre within Melbourne's cultural hub - graduating as skilled musicians ready for sustainable orchestral careers.
